Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment for migraines

July 18, 2022

If you suffer from persistent migraines, you may have looked into a number of migraine treatments. Many rely on medication for migraine relief, however this method does not work for everyone.

In recent times, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective and non-invasive treatment for migraines which requires no sedation or recovery period. TMS is a mild and gentle treatment used for patients who have failed to respond to pharmaceutical treatments and can often be used as a supplement to other therapies.

With this treatment, the aim is not to stimulate the neurons, as with other TMS treatments but to instead use magnetic pulses to relieve the pressure across the cranium which may be causing the migraines to occur.

How does transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) work?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) works by harnessing the power of magnetic pulses to alleviate pressure in the areas of the brain known to cause migraines, aiming to treat existing migraines and prevent further migraines from occurring.

Although this may sound intense, some patients find treatment sessions peaceful and relaxing. You will be welcomed into the clinic, offered a hot or cold drink to enjoy and then get shown to our treatment room where one of our medical professionals will explain the treatment and answer any questions. Once you are happy you can take a seat in the treatment chair to begin the process.

The clinician will then introduce the TMS equipment  and will slowly move it around your head. You will feel no pain, all you may hear is a low hum or clicks whilst the equipment is working. You may experience some twitching around your facial muscles and also in your arms and shoulders.

Does transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) have side effects?

TMS therapy for migraines has minimal to no side effects. Some may have a slight headache for a brief time after treatment, but this will subside quickly. Others have reported feeling sleepiness or slight neck pain.

All side effects are minimal, and you will return to normal quickly after treatment and be able to return to your daily routine.
